About
Kapwa Art Therapy and Counseling is actually Fredelyn Calla, who identifies as a second-generation Filipina-American and is an LCPC, a licensed clinical professional counselor and an ATR-BC, a board-certified art therapist. She holds a masters in counseling psychology: art therapy degree from Adler University in Chicago, IL.
Her clients will be meeting a short, middle-aged Filipina-American lady who simply wants to hear your story. She grew up on stories from her lola, friends, millions of books and horribly outdated '80s sitcoms. You can expect humor, patience, reflection and silence. She wants to know how you feel about your story, what it looks like to you and what words you use to describe it. You're here for a reason. She’s scooting over because she simply wants to make space for you in this world.
Fred specializes in working with those who want to learn more about emotional expression and are open to art therapy. They identify as Asian, Asian American, Pacific Islander, and Native Hawaiian descent, but especially Filipino/a/x. They need help with trauma, burnout, effects of oppression, people-pleasing tendencies, their activism efforts, grief/loss, anxiety and depression, relationship concerns, life transitions, health and aging issues, such as living with cancer, skin conditions and other chronic illnesses.
Her work is influenced by relational, feminist, trauma-informed, Adlerian, social justice-oriented, anti-racist, anti-oppressive, decolonization and liberation framework models.
In addition to Kapwa ATC, Fred also currently leads emotional support groups for adults living with cancer at Gilda’s Club Chicago. She also teaches in the art therapy department of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and provides art therapy supervision to emerging professionals.
