About our September Workshop:
This workshop with explore the similarities and differences of clinical skills and training and the consulting field with emphasis on the Filipino/a/x population and mental health and its application with clients in the United States and abroad. The foundational orientation will be Sikolohiyang Pilipino (Filipino Psychology) in terms of conceptualization, approaches, and building of relationships with clients. Participants will understand and be aware of the need for mental health consultation and explore strategies to pivot towards becoming a mental health consultant.
About our September Facilitator:
Patricia (Trish) H. A. Perez, PhD is adjunct faculty, Department of Psychology, at Adler University Chicago. Some of her areas of research and practice expertise include mental health and wellness, Sikolohiyang Pilipino, children and families, disabilities and neurodiversity, international psychology, international programming and education, organizational leadership, career development/life coaching, child abuse and neglect, and third culture kids/adults (TCK/As). Dr. Perez was a Visiting Faculty in Summer 2021 at the Department of Psychology in Ateneo de Manila University.

Kasamahan: The Uses of EMDR Therapy within Filipino/a/x Communities with Alissa Catiis, LCSW
Uplifting Therapin*y’s community members, Kasamahan! Learn with Filipinx Mental Health Professionals, and from their current bodies of work. This presentation will focus on the uses of EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) an evidenced-based treatment for trauma. The presenter will discuss cultural considerations with Filipino/a/x clients. Participants will gain a basic understanding of what EMDR is and how it works. Additionally, participants will develop a basic understanding of special issues in Filipino/a/x communities that can be addressed using EMDR. Lastly, the presenters will guide participants in a demonstration of EMDR-based self-soothing techniques.
Alissa Catiis MA, LCSW, RYT is Filipina American psychotherapist, yoga teacher, and anti-racism consultant who specializes in working with trauma survivors, couples, BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color), and the LGBTQIA+ community. She has experience working in public schools, hospitals, healthcare, and social service organizations. She consults with organizations about trauma-informed systems and bringing anti-racist and anti-oppression principles into action. Alissa is a certified EMDR therapist and trauma-sensitive yoga facilitator with training in contemplative clinical practice and art therapy.

Join us for a conversation with Dr. Jei Africa, a prominent Filipinx psychologist in the Bay Area. Moderated by Dr. Jean-Arrelia Tolentino, this event will provide an opportunity to learn about Dr. Africa's career journey and his dedication to advocating for mental health services for underserved and marginalized communities, including Filipinx communities. Dr. Africa will share strategies on how to apply clinical knowledge to community advocacy and continue the fight for access to mental health services. Don't miss this chance to gain insights from one of the leading voices in mental health advocacy.
About Dr. Africa:
Dr. Jei Africa is a passionate advocate for health equity, striving to ensure social justice and access to care for underserved and marginalized communities. As a behavioral health leader in Northern California, he has led community outreach efforts, expanded care for justice-involved clients, and initiated residential facility projects for mental health and substance abuse support. He was a founding member of the San Mateo LGBTQ+ Commission and launched the San Mateo Pride Center. Dr. Africa, who immigrated from the Philippines in the ’90s, began his career as a bilingual licensed therapist and certified domestic violence and addiction counselor, driven by his commitment to public service and the well-being of individuals and families.
