About
Hi and welcome! I’m happy you’re here.
My name is Joanna DeRosa, but you can call me Jay (she/her). My office is located just 5 mins north of Downtown Orlando in College Park, where I primarily offer in-person sessions. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida, and received my MA degree with training in both clinical counseling and music therapy. My Master’s thesis was on the integrations of Mixed-Race Counseling and Music Therapy, and was inspired by my own lived experiences as a biracial Filipina woman and the daughter of an immigrant.
I’ve had the privilege of working with clients of varying ages and backgrounds in pediatric music therapy, a domestic violence shelter and outreach program, a bridge housing program, and a community mental health office. Because I’ve had the opportunity to work with diverse groups of people, I have been equipped with experience that has deepened my understanding of diverse mental health needs and effective therapeutic techniques. Currently a majority of my caseload are people who are struggling with managing symptoms caused anxiety, depression, grief, and trauma.
At the heart of my practice are values of authenticity, respect, and compassion. Naming my practice after the core value of Kapwa, my approach is grounded in creating genuine human connection. In working together, I draw from a range of therapeutic approaches to provide a comprehensive and supportive experience, and I value the integration of music into sessions whenever it’s beneficial. Above all, I just want my clients to feel safe, seen, and understood.
I also believe therapy is your space where you can be yourself. I am BIPOC, Neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ affirming, and my commitment is to support you with understanding and care as you work towards your goals. If you want want to learn more about what working with me will look like, or if you're interested in booking a free ~15 min consultation, please visit my website: www.kapwa-therapy.com
