Kasamahan: The Uses of EMDR Therapy within Filipino/a/x Communities with Alissa Catiis, LCSW

Uplifting Therapin*y’s community members, Kasamahan! Learn with Filipinx Mental Health Professionals, and from their current bodies of work. This presentation will focus on the uses of EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) an evidenced-based treatment for trauma. The presenter will discuss cultural considerations with Filipino/a/x clients.  Participants will gain a basic understanding of what EMDR is and how it works. Additionally, participants will develop a basic understanding of special issues in Filipino/a/x communities that can be addressed using EMDR. Lastly, the presenters will guide participants in a demonstration of EMDR-based self-soothing techniques.

Alissa Catiis MA, LCSW, RYT is Filipina American psychotherapist, yoga teacher, and anti-racism consultant who specializes in working with trauma survivors, couples, BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color), and the LGBTQIA+ community. She has experience working in public schools, hospitals, healthcare, and social service organizations. She consults with organizations about trauma-informed systems and bringing anti-racist and anti-oppression principles into action. Alissa is a certified EMDR therapist and trauma-sensitive yoga facilitator with training in contemplative clinical practice and art therapy.
