From Content to Connection: Creating Community Change through a Filipino Lens
In the age of the "infinite scroll," we often forget that every post is a glimpse into someone else’s reality. In social media, we aren’t chasing engagement; we are connecting to community, shaping the resources available, and engaging in kuwentuhan exploring what our community believes is possible.
Inspired by the work of Imani Barbarin (@crutches_and_spice) and grounded in psychological research, this article explores how storytelling, specifically through the Filipino tradition of Kuwentuhan, can drive massive social change.
Kuwentuhan: The Decolonizing Power of Narrative
Standard communication models often treat "the audience" as data points. However, research into Filipino American health disparities highlights the importance of Kuwentuhan as a decolonizing research and communication method (Palma et al., 2025).
Kuwentuhan is more than just "storytelling"; it is a communal process of sharing life stories to make sense of our world. Through this culturally-informed process, we subvert the "researcher-subject" or "influencer-follower" hierarchy and create a space of collective-care and Kapwa (shared identity).
Our work in our organizations expands BEYOND the "how-to" guide to praxis with “care-in-action”! Through our Open Mic Poetry nights, our Kita-Kits or the Tambayan events, and even our collaborations with Pilipinx in Wellness we honor our ancestral practices of healing through talk-story and kuwentuhan. These lived experiences of our community is invaluable in moving from top-down information to grassroots wisdom.
Moving from Stigma to "Lakas ng Loob"
Research shows that narratives are more persuasive than raw data for reducing stigma (Communication Monographs; Basic and Applied Social Psychology). In the Philippines, the concept of hiya (shame) often prevents people from seeking mental health support.
When we engage in kuwentuhan about our struggles, we are practicing what scholars have identified as a decolonizing approach to mental health. It transforms a private burden into a collective strength, shifting the community from hiya to lakas ng loob (inner courage).
Content as Community Advocacy
According to research on Filipino social work and community-based practices, driving change requires more than just awareness, it requires advocacy and systemic intervention (Social Work Faculty Publications, 2024). By highlighting how systemic issues (like health disparities or lack of representation) affect the community, we empower our followers to move toward bayanihan (moving together towards collective action). The content of our work challenges the individualized-focus on success towards creating space for kapwa (Shared identity), and begs our curiosity to ask, “how can we be successful together” and “how can we create our work to uplift our community”?
Small Shifts for Big Possibilities
Imani Barbarin’s work reminds us that disability justice is deeply tied to how we talk about our stories and who tells our stories. For the Filipinos, this means recognizing that our stories can be a tool for pagbabagong-loob (inner transformation that leads to outer change). Through our directory, we seek to amplify those traditionally silenced in health and social discourse, through our chapters and organizational programming, we utilize our voices to desigmatize and show how that mental health isn't a sign of weakness, but a component of Ginhawa (whole-person/total well-being). We encourage YOU to use your narrative to show how the community has the power to address healing, health, and care!
